The Confluence of Divinity

Baba Harihar Nath Mandir

Standing at the sacred confluence of the Ganges and Gandak rivers, this unique temple worships the supreme union of Lord Vishnu (Hari) and Lord Shiva (Har).

A Shrine of Unified Faith

The **Baba Harihar Nath Mandir** in Sonepur holds a distinct and exalted position in Hindu theology. It is one of the rare shrines where the deity represents half Lord Vishnu (*Hari*) and half Lord Shiva (*Har*), symbolizing the ultimate oneness of the divine forces of preservation and dissolution.

Local legend dictates that the original temple was built by Lord Rama on his journey to King Janaka's court in Mithila for Sita's Swayamvar. The current structure, however, was reconstructed by Raja Ram Narain during the late Mughal period and further renovated by the Birla family in modern times.

The Legend of Gajendra Moksha

The temple's location is deeply tied to the famous Puranic legend of *Gajendra Moksha*. According to the Bhagavata Purana, a great elephant (Gajendra) was attacked by a formidable crocodile (Huhu) while drinking water from the river.

After struggling for years, the exhausted elephant plucked a lotus and prayed to Lord Vishnu, who immediately descended upon Garuda to sever the crocodile's head with his Sudarshana Chakra, granting salvation to both.

It is believed that this epic struggle and subsequent divine intervention occurred precisely at this confluence in Sonepur, making the very soil here highly revered.

The Confluence (Sangam)

The spiritual magnetism of the temple is amplified by its geographical location at the confluence of the holy Ganges and the Gandak river. A ritualistic dip (Snan) at this Sangam, followed by Darshan of Baba Harihar Nath, is considered highly purifying, capable of washing away lifetimes of negative karma.
