Maa Bamleshwari Temple

Goddess Bamleshwari (Shakti)📍 Dongargarh, Chhattisgarh

A towering abode of the Divine Mother, rising 1,600 feet above the earth, testing the devotee's physical endurance and rewarding their soul.

The Ascent to the Mother

Dongargarh, translating to "Mountains" (Dongar) and "Fort" (Garh), is the proud home of Goddess Bamleshwari. The main temple, reverently known as Badi Bamleshwari, is perched dramatically on a hilltop 1,600 feet high. To reach the sanctum, devotees must climb an arduous path of over 1,000 stone steps, transforming the visit into a physical Tapasya (penance) before experiencing the Darshan of the Goddess.

For those unable to make the climb, a modern ropeway offers breathtaking aerial views of the surrounding forests and lakes, making the Mother's blessings accessible to all.

The Legacy of Vikramaditya

The origins of the temple are wrapped in deep historical folklore, most notably linking back to King Veersen, a local ruler of ancient Kamakhya Nagari, and the legendary Emperor Vikramaditya of Ujjain. Local legends narrate profound tales of musical contests, divine interventions, and spiritual conquests where Goddess Bamleshwari appeared to restore Dharma and resolve the conflict.

At the base of the hill lies the Chhoti Bamleshwari Temple. It is an enduring local tradition that a pilgrimage is only considered complete when a devotee pays their respects at both the hilltop and the foothill shrines.
