Enshrined in the deep, mystical forests of Dantewada, the Maa Danteshwari Temple stands as one of the 52 revered Shakti Peethas of Sanatana Dharma. According to the Shiva Purana, when Lord Shiva carried the immolated body of Goddess Sati, performing the cosmic Tandava, Lord Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra dismembered her form to calm Shiva's grief. It is believed that the Goddess's tooth (Dant) fell at this exact sacred spot, giving the town its name, Dantewada, and the Goddess her identity, Danteshwari.

The sanctuary is remarkably positioned at the sacred Triveni Sangam (confluence) of the Shankini and Dhankini rivers, creating a powerful spiritual vortex that has drawn seekers for over a millennium.

The Protector of Bastar

Originally constructed in the 14th century by the Chalukya (Kakatiya) kings, Maa Danteshwari is worshipped as the Kuladevi (family deity) of the royal house of Bastar. However, her true power lies in her absolute reverence by the indigenous tribal populations of the region. The temple stands as a glorious testament to how Vedic rituals merge with ancient animistic and tribal traditions.

The sanctum contains an awe-inspiring six-armed idol of the Goddess sculpted from black stone. The architecture itself, divided into four segments—Garbhagriha, Maha Mandap, Mukhya Mandap, and Sabha Mandap—reflects traditional South Indian influences blended with local craftsmanship.
