Built in the 11th century by King Ratnadeva I of the Kalachuri dynasty, the Shree Mahamaya Devi Temple in Ratanpur holds a unique theological concept. The term "Mahamaya" translates to the Great Illusion, reflecting the ultimate feminine energy that binds and simultaneously liberates the universe.
Fascinatingly, the presiding deity in the Garbhagriha is a dual representation. The frontward facing deity is Goddess Saraswati (the patron of wisdom and arts), while hidden directly behind her stands Goddess Mahakali (the fierce destroyer of ego and time). Together, they represent the complete spectrum of divine feminine power, operating in cosmic balance.

The Sri Yantra Alignment
The temple is built in a robust Nagar style, surrounded by massive walls resembling an ancient fort. Within the sprawling complex lie ancient ponds and a multitude of smaller shrines dedicated to Shiva and Hanuman. One of the most esoteric features of the Mahamaya Temple is its geometric alignment; the sanctum is believed to be constructed over a massive, buried Sri Yantra—the ultimate Tantric diagram representing the union of Shiva and Shakti.
Because of this, Ratanpur has historically been a significant center for Tantric sadhana (esoteric spiritual practices), drawing ascetics and scholars from across the subcontinent.
