Sree Vadakkunnathan Temple
The classic embodiment of Kerala's temple architecture and the epicentre of the world-famous Thrissur Pooram.
The Legend
The First Temple of Parashurama
According to legend, the Sree Vadakkunnathan Temple is the first temple created by Lord Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Vishnu, after he reclaimed the land of Kerala from the sea. Located in the heart of Thrissur (The Town of Sacred Shiva), the temple sits on a 65-acre hillock surrounded by a massive stone wall with four grand gateways (Gopurams) facing the cardinal directions.
The Ghee Lingam
A Miracle of Devotion
One of the most extraordinary aspects of this temple is that the central Shiva Lingam is never visible. For centuries, devotees have performed Abhishekam (anointing) with ghee. This ghee has accumulated over generations to form a massive mound, yet amazingly, it never melts, even in the tropical heat of Kerala, and never emits a foul odor. The mound is believed to represent the snow-clad peaks of Mount Kailash.
Art & Culture
The Museum of Murals
The temple is a UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage site, recognized for its exceptional preservation of Kerala's architectural and artistic traditions. The walls of the shrine are adorned with 17th-century murals depicting the Mahabharata and the dance of Shiva. The Koothambalam (temple theater) is one of the finest in the state, featuring exquisite wood carvings and hosting traditional performances like Chakyar Koothu.
